Although Vice President and President had an Irish father (a well known fact at the time) nobody was curious enough to ask him if the father was a citizen at the time of Arthur’s birth. Why not? You have two choices: either people in 1880 were idiots compared to current Americans (yeah, right) or they didn’t think this issue had any bearing on Arthur’s eligibility.
