A minority of the musical elite are always sniffy about popular hymns forgetting they are popular because the tunes and the words have such a widespread appeal to ordinary folk – they communicate an electricity that runs deep into the very essence of our souls.

As The Reverend Rowland Hill, pastor of the Surrey Chapel in London said in the early 19th century “The Devil Should Not Have All The Best Tunes”

So here is a purely personal choice of hymns that always make the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end

The disappearance of hymnody in the contemporary church has resulted in a diminishment of theological truth, intellectual understanding of the faith.....not to mention the musical capability of children growing up in church. Dumbing down, as it were.

Hymns may be 'unpopular' now, but their spiritual strength and beauty will bring them back.

It's part of loving the Lord with all our hearts, our souls and our minds.

Among my many favorites -

Spirit of God, Descend Upon My Heart
Dear Lord and Father of Mankind
Holy, Holy, Holy
Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts
Jesus, and Shall it Ever Be

And that's just for starters......haven't even mentioned any Gospel Songs, or Swedish hymns, which are RICH in thought and the Spirit.

I’m a worship leader at a cowboy church in Arizona. We always make sure we get some “yee-haw” in with our “amens”. I love singing the old hymns. You can do them with energy and feeling.

Here’s one of my favorites - “Just A Closer Walk With Thee”. I borrowed from Patsy Cline’s version of the song. We always include old hymns in our service, along with contemporary, country gospel, bluegrass gospel. The old hymns are precious and should not be lost.

While I enjoy much of the contemporary and praise music, there are times only the oldies will do.

Christmas and Easter are two of those times. This Easter I went to a local mainstream denominational church, skipping my regular church, in hopes of hearing/singing the classic hymns of the resurection. Sigh...there was but one sung.

One of my favorites is “I Need Thee Every Hour”

That's a great hymn and one of my favorites also. It still brings a smile to my face remembering my late brother (one of those cowboy Christians) who always called it "The Baker's Hymn".

I was mildly interested on getting your take on your favorite hymns, but not enough to click out to some other website.

I’d have to say “It is Well With My Soul” and “The Old Rugged Cross” are probably my favorites. Of course “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace” and “In the Garden” are also right up there.

This is The Feast of Victory For our God, is one I like to sing loud in church, and I’ve always liked Lift High the Cross.

Overall I agree with Nazarene doctrine but the church we attend is run by the elderly, for the elderly and it is sad just watching the thing die a slow, painful death.

Our church is run by the young, for the young. There's no reverence and it's sad watching seeker-centered worship. I hope your church does it better.

“Amazing Grace
Greatest. Song. Ever.”

Hard to argue with that.
