The best way of knowing what is going on, is to get 5-10 friends who live in different places around the US, and ask them to, once a week, note the price of several different common things, on an agreed upon list with standard rules. Create a blog for just them and you.I can remember when the evening broadcast news did something like that (20-30 years ago?). They'd have a standard "shopping cart" full of goods and household items, a typical basket of items for the typical American household, and compare the prices over time.
