I think anyone who receives welfare should not be allowed to have cell phones.
Cell phones are frequently cheaper to have than land line phones anymore.
Do you think they shouldn’t have electricity or running water too?
The same people who get food stamps are the same ones whose kids are fed at school for free. And some schools send home backpacks full of food for the weekend.
If the schools now send food home with kids, then why do we double dip and give them food stamps too?
Just anecdotal evidence, some of these people with food stamps drive some nice cars, in addition to having bling and cell phones.
If subsidizing food for people just allows them to spend the money they have on other stuff, is that really a good expenditure of public funds?
We don’t want people to go hungry, but we also shouldn’t be enabling them not to work or enabling them to have a better living standard than those who do work for a living.
I’m fine with cell phones. Just turn off the cable or satellite, please.

As with all technology it's how it's used that makes the
difference. I am currently unemployed and have signed up
with several on line job search engines that email the latest
jobs posted to me. My Droid has been a real asset.
There are these commercials for free government phones--the Advantage program or some such name--and these people say things like, "Now that I have my Advantage phone, I can call her doctor!" (referring to her young doctor).
Seriously? She has no regular phone or the ability to borrow a phone or go to a friend's house if she's concerned about her daughter's health? Apparently there were a lot of sick, unattended-to children before this free government phone program.

If they don't have a cell phone, how will they get the call telling them where and when to show up for their new job?
By the way, that is the logic used in those free Welfare cell phone commercials.

You’ve got to be kidding! The GOVERNMENT (aka American taxpayers)give them the phone and minutes every month for FREE. You take that entitlement away and there will be a lot of mad mamma’s running around!
