Are the remains of Jumbo http://www.pbase.com/pgkps/trinity_site still there? Or has it been sold to the Chinese for recycled?
I saw Jumbo (and have some picture myself of it) in October 2008.
That was before the big O got elected.
I remember speaking with a WWII vet when I was younger, and he saw it in much the same way(who knows, they could have been on the same ship). He said that none of the sailors on board knew what it was.
Wow! Could be the same ship.
I miss the fighting spirit of the WW2 generation.
Interesting, thanks for posting.
My dad was on the Manhattan Project during the war. He was one of relatively few who actually worked on Manhattan (at Columbia University) doing basic research on the problem of separating U235 and U238. I know he spent some time at Oak Ridge, but I don’t know much more than that.
He left me a small silver pin that all project employees were given after the war, and a certificate from the War Department, dated 6 August 1945 (Hiroshima day).
So interesting he had a part of history.
We are grateful for your father’s service.
As am I, but I am just as grateful for the untold thousands of others who served this great country in their own way, in the military and as civilians.
That was, without a doubt, the Greatest Generation!
It brings me to tears thinking about the greatest generation.
We need another great generation now to rise to the challenge of the threats of the 21st century. Maybe you are one of them.
Sandra Day O’Conner’s book mentions her family seeing it one morning from their ranch. They were about 100 miles away. The locals didn’t know what was planned for that morning, and didn’t know why the sky lit up...
