Democrats in New Mexico Want to Raise Taxes Too

Democrats on New Mexico’s legislative tobacco committee came out with a plan this past Wednesday to burden the New Mexico taxpayer and put constituents out of work. The Democrats want to raise taxes on cigars and smokeless tobacco from the current 25 percent of wholesale cost to 57 percent. However, Republican Gov. Susana Martinez is thankfully bringing sanity to this circus as she made it clear that she will oppose this tax increase proposal. The “promise” of new revenue - $7 million - would lead to an array of adverse economic and health consequences for New Mexico. Lifestyle taxes, such as taxes on tobacco products, have consistently proven to NOT be source of sustainable tax revenue. For example, in the case of Washington, D.C., a recent increase in the tax on cigarettes correlated to a 20-percent decline in tobacco tax revenues. According to the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, New Mexico is among the top five states for smuggling destinations with 37.2 percent of all tobacco products coming from smuggling. While most smugglers are average citizens trying to save the dollars in their wallets, in other instances, smuggling is orchestrated by violent criminals...

Have you looked at what the Rats are doing in Illinois? The lying gov has done nothing but raise taxes since the election. Yesterday he announced that he wants to double the tolls on the entire Illinois tollway system.

Why does the title need the qualifier “in New Mexico”?

Because it's not like a tax-free indian reservation isn't pretty much a couple of hours from anywhere in NM. Raise the taxes, help the reservations, lower revenue from taxes, and hurt non-reservation businesses. Other than that, what could go wrong?

Just received email from TDOT (Texas Dept of Transp) re my pre-paid toll account. They want me to maintain a minimum bal of $40.00. I use one toll one way once a week for $6.00 a month. Not going to happen. Lots of folks use this though and if all of them have at least a $40 balance, lots of money in one account for them to use and not too judiciously either.

Illinois Tollway has the IPass with a $40 up-front that you draw down on too. If you don’t use it, the manual toll collection charges are double the IPass. These scum get you if you don’t “get your mind right”.

If they cut all the giveaways to illegals and the children of illegals the state would be cutting taxes. New Mexico is one of two states that give drivers licenses to illegals and is one of the more generous food stamp states. The illegals now drive cars with no insurance while drinking when they should have been booted out long ago.

I am a little irritated after spending time in a NM MVD office today where the paperwork requirements for citizens are apparently greater than those demanded for illegals. An MVD worker speaking to an illegal, in spanish of course, asked if he had a social security number (no of course) and the MVD worker then told the illegal how to obtain a matricula consular from the Mexican Consulate in Albuquerque. New Mexico is a beautiful state but is rapidly become a little Mexico.
