I enjoyed reading your analysis.

Today, I believe he is a madman, and we will never understand his logic and motivations. Even if we got a sociopath to question him and uncover the answers, we would not understand those answers.

If he slowly descended into madness, his early writing would not be connected to his current work.

He seems to have lost respect for all Human life. He identified a group as the root cause to current problems???? He then sets out to erase that group????

The medium to long term question is > how do innocents protect themselves? The Police needed 90 minutes to respond??

Somebody else just posted a section from one of this guy's ravings. This is a particularly noteworthy sentence:

The entity [one of Breivik's "knight" organizations] should demand that the alleged Justiciar Knight in question surgically remove his penis and testicles and/or execute a fixed number of civilian children.

This was to prove loyalty to the cause.

He was a psychopath. We joke about people who think they are Napoleon, but they're only funny when they're safely locked in a secure ward somewhere. Breivik is like a somebody who thinks himself a combination of Napoleon and Hannibal Lecter.

“The medium to long term question is > how do innocents protect themselves? The Police needed 90 minutes to respond??”

In much of Europe that question is never even asked anymore. The assumption is that the power of protection is one of State sovereignity and not one left in the hands of the individual.

I am Christian so that thought leads to the ever present question of how do Christians confront evil? Not just the evil we can prepare to meet and defend against whether by personal means or societal or even military means. But evil such as what arose in this horror?

Sometimes we can’t. But even so we know that this evil and all evil was confronted and is confronted by the Cross. I know and believe fully that Christ is the Victor. That all the wounds inflicted. All the battles that are seemingly lost. All the evil given reign by dark souled men. All of that well be swept away before the coming storm of Christ’s triumphant return.

I know too that evil can never wipe out what and who is good in this world. That for every very loud, very public act of monstrosity there are small acts of love, courage, faith, hope, goodness, mercy, caring, trust, compassion and beauty. These acts public and private would not be possible without the Grace of Christ, the Breath of the Holy Spirit and the Great Love and Mercy of God present amongst us.

Evil is a reality that reflects a falsehood. Christians believe in a reality that reflects and declares the Truth. The Cross of Christ is not a defeat. It is a victory.
