Where do you expect to get the bodies to scare off the scavengers?

I keep wondering about that. I know the importance of defending one's stash, and I've watched threads like this devolve into pissing contests, where tough macho-man bullies try to prove they've got more bullets than the other side. Wouldn't it just be easier to nail up a quarantine sign? (In addition to being well-armed and prepared, not as a substitute)
