POLL: Record Support for Arizona-Style Immigration Enforcement Laws

At a time when the Department of Justice is following the lead of fringe groups like the ACLU and MALDEF, in suing Arizona and Alabama for their common sense immigration enforcement laws, a new poll shows record support for these approaches by the American people.

According to a new Rasmussen poll, a whopping 75% of Americans support AZ-style penalties vs. employers who knowingly hire illegal aliens, and 65% say police should automatically check immigration status during traffic stops - both record highs and hallmarks of Arizona laws which the Obama Administration has tried to stop. In addition, 67% say a state should be able to enforce immigration laws when the Feds have failed. (see chart below)

American People Stand With Arizona-Style Laws
Enforcement Provision Support Oppose
Strict sanctions on employers who hire illegal aliens 75% 16%
Support state laws to enforce immigration law when Feds fail to act 67% 22%
Automatic immigration checks by police during traffic stops 65% 26%
Shut down companies who knowingly/repeatedly hire illegals 61% 21%
Strict sanctions on landlords who rent to illegal aliens 59% 24%

These are big numbers. And they demonstrate why Arizona-style enforcement laws such as S.B. 1070, Alabama's S.B. 56 and Georgia's S.B. 87 must be models for every state nationwide.

The cost of welfare for illegals is killing this country, but no one in congress wants to talk about it.

I know I’m going to get crucified for saying this, but....discrimination is bad no matter who is being targeted. We’re in construction and our guys are getting pulled over ALL the time for bogus reasons, INS rounds them up in their homes to check them out. They literally are stopped and checked all the time. The unemployed welfare losers that sell drugs and commit crimes are left loitering on the streets. There needs to be a sensible solution. My guys are legal, they are paid legally. I’m up against contractors that pay illegals and whites cash under the table without worker’s comp insurance and homeowners who are too greedy to pay the extra money required for reputable contractors who do things legally. I’m hurt by these practices alot and want a solution. But I can’t imagine any other race or group of people tolerating the harrassment of Latinos. And you can blame the unemployment on illegals all you want but the born and bred americans in this country that collect welfare are lazy and unemployable. I hired a WHITE guy this morning to do carpentry work at 7 am. He quit at 10 am because it was too hot. This is a guy who is living with his brother because he’s been unemployed so long. I agree something needs to be done about illegal immigration and paying people (white, black or whatever) under the table, but thinking that getting pulled over for bogus reasons and interrogating everyone in the vehicle (when they are clearly working and not committing a crime) isn’t the way to go. Too bad we don’t have any politicians who are willing to do the right thing.

So you’re saying your guys have done absolutely nothing wrong, but they are pulled over and harassed just because they’re Hispanic? I find that very hard to believe. But even if it’s true, your anger is misplaced. You...and they...should be angry at all the Hispanic illegals, the gangbangers; the unlicensed, uninsured and/or drunk drivers, etc., who give all Hispanic males a bad name. If we got rid of the illegals, then we’d know that the remaining Hispanics were legal, and life would be easier for them and for all of us.

Texas has a Republican Governor, and a Republican dominated legislature, yet at least five very good anti-illegal immigration bills were intentionally stalled to death in committee this year.

I see our state government much as I see the government in Washington. Just as we sent a record number of conservatives to Washington last year, we did the same in Texas --- and we got the same results.

My own industry has been driven into the ground by illegal workers, but the politicians haven't done a thing to put a stop to it.

Too bad that to get rid of the illegals, everyone is perfectly happy to have legal, law abiding, hardworking people harrassed. I’m angry about a lot of things right now. Illegals, contractors that pay under the table, and homeowners who complain about contractors and how disreputable they are, but can’t resist them when they can save a few thousand on their job. I hope everyone that bashes illegals thinks about that the next time they need a home improvement project. I’m sure you’ll all be willing to pay a few thousand more to cover the payroll taxes, the equitable wages, the worker’s comp insurance, the liability insurance and everything else that goes with being a reputable, legal company.

We the People are going to have to jam this down Congress’ throats....just as they’ve so obligingly rammed ObamaCare and the “debt deal” down ours...
