Catholic Professor Misinforms on Abortion
Accuracy in Academia ^ | August 9, 2011 | Malcolm A. Kline

“Bianca Laureano, a professor at College of Mount Saint Vincent is under fire for contributing to a pro-abortion blog and promoting criticism of the pro-life work of the nation’s Catholic bishops,” Steven Ertelt wrote on LifeNews.com on August 5, 2011.

“A conversation about Latinas choosing abortion and what the rates are, as well as a focus on Rosie Jimenez was provided,” Dr. Laureano wrote of a presentation that she gave at her alma mater, the University of Maryland, this year. “It’s not often that I get choked up during presentations, but this time I teared up and my voice cracked as I talked about Rosie Jimenez, what her death represents still today, what her daughter has lost, and what we do when we easily forget the legacy she has given us.”

“Discussing Rosie Jimenez’s inability to obtain and afford a legal abortion was a good transition to discussions of the Welfare Queen.”

In that earlier blog which she linked to, Dr. Laureano wrote that “Rosie was the first victim of the Hyde Amendment, which disallowed Medicaid to cover abortion procedures to people needing them and receiving Medicaid. Rosie died of an illegal abortion when she realized she was pregnant again and could not afford to cover the cost of an abortion. Rosie’s death demonstrates the institutional classism, racism and –isms’ in general that still exists today for many people seeking reproductive health care in the US and all over the world.”

“Rosie died on October 3, 1977.” Actually, in a 1982 court case, the state of Massachusetts argued that “the regulations implementing the Hyde Amendment were not published until February, and not in final form until July 1978 (effective August).”

Good grief, Academiadotorg, but this article seems to imply that the "misinformation" consisted mainly in getting the dates wrong.

Yet it seems to me the "misinformation" comes from a profoundly deeper source. And plays out as a grotesque inversion of Catholic (Christian) moral teaching.

Bianca Laureano, a professor at a Catholic college, surely would be very up-to-date on what certain American Catholic bishops have been up to in recent times; and so would know that her "progressive social views" are anathema in orthodox Roman Catholic teaching.

Still Prof. Laureano seems so discombobulated by the (unjust!) plight of the late Rosie Jimenez — who wouldn't be dead now but for the fact that she was trying to kill her baby — that Catholic moral teaching must be thrown out the window....

...In order to instantiate: Social Justice. A new, man-made Eden on earth.

It seems to me Prof. Laureano is off her rocker. I don't know what she calls herself, but it seems sufficiently clear to me that she is not a Roman Catholic.

Well, my two-cents' worth. FWIW [probably not much]

Thanks for posting this, Academiadotorg!

Another question could be: how exactly could Rosie Jimenez' abortion be described as "illegal" in 1977 when abortions at every age and every stage of pregnancy were legalized in 1973? Is it perhaps that an abortion not taxpayer-subsidized by Medicaid is to be considered not quite acceptable from a public-benefits point of view?

And if, as Ruth Bader Ginsberg says, the purpose of abortion is to fight poverty, then what is the objection if the abortion was unexpectedly super-effective and reduced the number of poor Chicanas in McAllen, TX by two instead of by one?

But bettyboop is correct: the real cause for alarm is having a Catholic academic at a Catholic institution distributing anti-God, anti-human toxic waste pellets extruded from the anus of the Enemy of All Good, the entity described in Scripture as "a liar and the Father of Lies, and a murderer from the beginning."

Dear Sister, the apostasy in the Church is unprecedented these days.

Adoration time is needed by those who follow Church teaching to receive the strength to speak out and uphold the faith and to be able to withstand the persecution of the popular progressive movement trying to take over .

The progressives are unintelligent weak thinkers with unenlightened minds who cater to sinfulness

The late Father John Hardon spoke rightfully of real intellectual miracles that can move mountains

From Father Hardon..

Intellectual Miracles.

Intellectual miracles through the Blessed Sacrament - To many people it must seem odd to identify the highest form of miraculous phenomena as enlightenment of the human mind. However, a moment’s reflection will tell us it is not unusual at all. St. Paul could not be more clear. He tells us, “Faith is the substance of things to be hoped for. The evidence of things that are not seen. For by faith the men of old had testimony born to them. By faith we understand that the world was fashioned by the Word of God, and thus things visible were made out of things invisible.” (Hebrews 11:1)

Everything in Christianity finally depends on our faith. The mind must be enlightened by the light of the Living God. In order to know what is God’s will at every moment of our lives. The more deep our faith, the deeper our hope. The stronger our faith the more selfless our love.

What are we saying? We are saying that the most important miracles we need in our lives are not physical or even miracles of the will. What we mainly need is enlightenment of our minds by the Incarnate Truth who is present in our midst in the Blessed Sacrament.

No words of mine can begin to explain the importance of praying before the Blessed Sacrament. In order to obtain from our Eucharistic Lord the understanding of His revealed truth and to know how to share this truth with others. For most people prayer before the Blessed Sacrament is mainly, but not exclusively, a prayer of adoration. Of course, our highest form of prayer is to adore the Living God; especially the God who became man to dwell among us. He dwells among us literally, physically, geographically in the most Holy Eucharist in every tabernacle of every Catholic Church throughout the world. But, and I am speaking now from a lifetime experience especially as a priest. Our Eucharistic prayer is not only to be the prayer of adoration, but also that of St. Thomas the Apostle. Remember how he addresses our Savior, “My Lord and my God.”? Christ is in our midst in order that we might come to Him and obtain from Him the illumination of mind which we so constantly and desperately need.

The human will is a blind faculty. We don’t know with our wills alone what to choose, what to reject, what to love. Our wills must be enlightened by the mind and the mind must be enlightened by the mind of the Living God who became man.

The modern apostle of the Eucharist, St. Peter Julian Eymard, tells us how the Eucharist is our way. Christ identified (past tense) Himself as “the Way.” By this He meant that His mind, the mind of God which assumed, a human mind is to be the path that our minds must follow.

Christ’s intellect is to be the guide for our intelligence. Here I could speak not for an hour but for weeks of how indispensable - I repeat how indispensable - I repeat once more - how indispensable is prayer before the Blessed Sacrament to enlighten these dull, blind minds of ours; to understand what we believe and to know how we are to behave.

All of this has profound implications for our spiritual life. Jesus Christ is in the Holy Eucharist for a thousand reasons. But, and I mean this superlative, the single most fundamental reason why Christ is in the Holy Eucharist is that He might educate our minds to understand who He is to penetrate into the meaning of the mysteries we believe, to understand how He wants us to live our lives.

By now I have told enough people that there is no problem repeating - only God knows how naturally dull and stupid this writer is. That is why over the years most of my writing for publication, and for most of my teaching of classes, I have learned from our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament.

Here I ask how have the great masters of Christian theology obtained their superhuman grasp of the mysteries revealed by God? It has been from their meditation before Jesus Christ, Incarnate Truth present in the Blessed Sacrament.

In closing, I wish to share with you what I have learned in by now almost fifty years in the priesthood. The one place on earth that our minds are mainly enlightened by the mind of God is in the presence of God incarnate in the Holy Eucharist.

How today’s overly-educated world needs to know this. Time again we read again how in the Gospels Christ restored sight to the blind people of Palestine. All of this was a prelude to the miracles of phenomenal miraculous enlightenment that the Eucharistic Savior performs in favor of those who come to Him and say, “Lord I am blind enable me to see.”

Lord Jesus present in the Blessed Sacrament teach us from experience what wonders you work in favor of those that come to you present in the Holy Eucharist to work miracles of body of will and especially of mind because dear Jesus the Holy Eucharist is You and You are our God. And with God nothing is impossible. Amen. - FR John Hardon

Thank you so very much for posting these wonderful passages from the late Father Hardon, dear brother in Christ!

It seems to me if our minds are not enlightened by the Word of God, we are just spinning our wheels.... For Christ is Logos, Alpha–Omega, the Word of God by Whom, and for Whom, all things were made.... He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

May God ever bless you, dear stfassisi!
