The show would probably be more beliveable if it was about a long duration scientific expedition (hence bring along the kids) that gets marooned unexpectedly (e.g., the regular shipments of supplies stop coming through the time portal, communications go unanswered, don't know why, etc.). Faced with the prospect of being there forever, the family begins to adapt to its changed circumstances...etc.

You just described "Stargate: Universe," which failed spectacularly and ended abruptly after one season too many.
