2007.... Romney won the Straw Poll with 31% Huckabee won the caucuses in Jan. ...and McCain .07%

Makes you wonder how meaningful this poll is.

It’s not a predictive absolute of the eventual caucus winner much less the eventual nominee. Bush won both in the 2000 chase but it doesn’t always work that way.

The event is a big fund raiser for the Iowa GOP group and a chance to have a festival, imo. Kinda the opposite of NH where the candidates are expected to have boots on the ground for retail politicing at the local shops, etc. In the run up to 2008 I think McCain had made something over 50 trips to NH to walk amongst the voters.
