Hey, at least there's no inline CSS. Sometimes there are reasons to include a style tag in a page. I have to do it often if I don't have access to a global CSS and I'm working on a standalone page.

I could be incorrect, but I don't believe Jim and Co. have professional experienced fronted or user interaction personnel on staff. Certainly they could add a bottom border to the div’s, but it's not really affecting performance all that much. Yes there would be less client facing code, but for overall page load time I doubt seriously it would make much of a difference. Bandwidth does add up. That point I'll concede.

I, too, am a long standing front end developer and you gotta give and take. Complex floating, clearing, lazy loading etc are issues for a specialist to tackle. An intermediate or novice HTML coder is not going to understand all that stuff very well.

You and I could clean up the code in a jiffy, but the implementation is where the real work would come into play. Again, I stress that PERL is the most significant hurdle for FR to overcome. It's antiquated and slow.

That said, you'd probably hate my pure CSS as I often tag div id's with human readable naming conventions. In my line, there's no telling who might work on my code for sustainment after initial implementation. Therein I have to make it as simple as possible for a lesser or more inexperienced coder to understand without the commitment to enormous man-hours just to figure out my HTML and CSS. For fewer man-hours vs bandwidth, I'll go with fewer man-hours every time. It's also very helpful to have human readable code to hand off to JSP and JAVA developers as they are never very proficient in HTML.

That said, I'd like to offer Jim and John my services for any front end issues they might need to confront. I'd be more than happy to lend my expertise to help improve FR. Nothing, and I mean nothing, beats FR for information gathering. I can find more details and cross reference on FR, easily and quickly, than I can on Lexus Nexus. FR is the tops for its experience.

Thanks; I like this web site as it is. It hasn’t changed very much since I came here off Drudge in 1998 and I call that good.

You can do odd jobs around his house. Mow the lawn, do the dishwasher, put blacktop sealer on his driveway, take out the trash and stuff like that.

Thanks for finding and re-posting that.

It seems that FR must periodically revisit this issue.

I'm always curious why some folks don't just set up their own Conservative site.

Surely, with their declared skill sets, and the stated ease of doing so, their site would immediately become the Premium Conservative site on the inter-webs.

And after they did so, FR would probably become just a memory, left behind in the dustbin of history.

Deep underground bunker with geothermal power and radiation hardened servers?

I like the idea of duplicate sites at different locations.

What I worry about is that freerepublic is incredibly effective. It is so effective that I worry about it being a big, fat, target. The enemy of the Republic, the left, has a long history of thuggery and the use of force to destroy or incapacitate those who oppose their policies. They have no compunction about destroying them.

I would gladly pay some money for some security for freerepublic. To me, it kinda looks like the twin towers before 9/11. Some of our enemies may decide that it is just too big and juicy a target to let stand.

At the minimum, I would like to believe that freerepublic is backed up in such a way that mere physical damage would not prevent it from coming back on line in a week.

If there is anything we can do to provide that level of security, count me in.

Same reason that I keep using tools that are 40 or 50 years old with the same methods I learned as a youngster. They are made really well and the methods are time tested. It doesn’t cost anything for me to keep to the old ways and everything that is proposed to make it faster, cheaper, funnier and better costs more money and is guaranteed to have a lot of glitches, bugs, etc. The reason everyone keeps coming here and will continue to come here is simple. It’s the same reason that all the animals are drawn to the watering hole. Cause that’s where the water is.

Hi there my FRiend!!

As you said — just a small amount each month — from EVERYONE — would answer the problem.

What I don’t understand is why people who DO donate during the Freepathons(not the Monthly Donors) don’t do it as soon as the appeal starts. The goal is always reached, but why does it take so long — when every donor could do it early? It is not as tho the appeal is kept secret. They may not want to commit to a monthly amount but since they will give something — just do it as soon as the Freepathon comes on!

That’s a great idea Theo.
You should contact Jim and John Robinson with your offer.

I donate monthly but would agree that a $5 monthly contribution for posting rights wouldn’t hurt most.

If you want to say it bad enough, it should be worth a couple $ to have that option on someone else’ server.

Just an option.

I feel the same way. It’s well laid out, easy to navigate and find articles of interest.
