BTW, Philippe I/II sent at least FOUR armadas against the English. He didn't exactly lose ~ but he was not able to destroy the English fleet.

In the end, when Philippe II/III crammed the Treaty of London (1604) down the English' throat, it was pretty clear who had won.

NOTE: Philippe I/II also destroyed the Ottoman fleet ~ this was at the Battle of Lapanto where he combined with the Catholic League (and their fleet) to literally exterminate the Ottoman fleet (1571).

That pretty much ended residual Moslem advances into Europe although there were still plenty of battles to be fought. Even Captain John Smith who became Governor of Virginia had fought in the Balkan Wars against the Turks. He was taken as a POW.

Although Philippe I/II was a regular pain in the tail for the English, he had been their own King once upon a time (while married to Queen Mary).

Philippe II/III, his son, was more interested in partying and settled all the outstanding issues with other Europeans and OPENED AMERICA FOR SETTLEMENT by all (except the Dutch ~ they had to trick their way in).

It's worth everyone's while to read about these two characters ~ they kicked BUTT.
