I really don't think she will use the standard media route. I predict she will make a casual statement on her local radio talk station, just like she promised the hosts, and then let it explode online.

The media would be left cruising facebook and twitter for more info. That would be priceless.

Ideally she should wait for a major event — like this November, when the Senate and House fail to pass the Balanced Budget Amendment or the Super Committee screws up (as they invariably will) — and use that event as a rallying point for her campaign.

But I think the first deadline is October 14th, to sign up to be in the Michigan primaries. Then there are several more primaries that have an application date of November 1st.

I suppose she could sign up for those primaries, just in case, without officially declaring.
