another eruption about 3600 years ago also produced more than 10 cu km of tephra. An eruption in 1991 was Chile's second largest of the 20th century and formed a new 800-m-wide crater in the SW part of the caldera.

Thanks for that link NR. Tephra, for those who may not know the word, is a general term for volcanic ejecta -- everything from car-sized blocks of rock to razor-sharp volcanic glass ash that if breathed will slice your lungs into a bloody mess.

Cerro Hudson has the potential to be a Bad-Ass volcano! The 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helen's ejected only about 0.03 cubic mile of material. I know I'm mixing measuring systems but the comparison should be obvious.

YW. anytime I see caldera mentioned.. it perks my interest too.. these babies have had major eruptions ,, maybe not recently,, but.. ya never know.
