Pat Buchanan: Occupy Wall Street will turn violent with colder weather
The Daily Caller ^ | October 30, 2011 | Jeff Poor

During this weekend’s broadcast of “The McLaughlin Group,” host John McLaughlin asked his panel about what would happen to Occupy Wall Street as its novelty wears off and the weather gets colder. Amid mixed reactions, conservative MSNBC contributor Pat Buchanan described a scenario where freezing temperatures bring out the movement’s violent side.

“It’s going to end very, very badly with these folks in the winter,” Buchanan said, “and they’re not going to be getting publicity and they’re going to be acting up and acting badly like the worst of the demonstrators in the ’60s … not just overnight camping: They’re going to start fighting with the cops.”

Newsweek/Daily Beast liberal contributor Eleanor Clift suggested the movement would stick around, drawing parallels with the early twentieth-century women’s suffrage movement.

“There was one fight with the cops in Oakland: An Iraq war veteran was hit with a projectile in the head and is in critical condition,” Clift said.

“I don’t know who you blame for that, but I know how I view it. I think they have staying power … and secondly the suffragists who stood in front of the White House — they thought they would go home when it got cold. They heated bricks for them to stand on. I think these people have some staying power.”

Susan Ferrechio of the Washington Examiner sided with Buchanan.

“There’s just not that many of them,” Ferrechio said.

“We’re talking you know a couple hundred people camped out here and there in Washington, D.C. So staying power — I guess in the media, we’ll probably keep [mentioning] them. But I think also once winter comes along, you’ll see some of these people head home and it might get even smaller.”

The Chicago Tribune’s Clarence Page said the Occupy Wall Street movement has already shifted the public discussion, making it a success by any measure.

“Don’t measure their success by their numbers out on the street,” Page said. “Measure it by the way the conversation is changing. We’re talking about wealth gap right now. So instead of talking about what where we will cut now, where are we going stop spending now? All we talked about for the last several years. All of a sudden now we’re seeing the conversation shift and early polling shows the Occupy Wall Street group, among those following the news, as more popular than the tea party.”

McLaughlin’s take?

“The answer is: This is transitory, unless they spawn a third-party candidate.”

I hope they do run a third party candidate. That'd be a bigger nail in Obama's coffin then Ralph Nader was for Al Gore in 2000.

Eleanor Rodham Clift is a bonehead. Yeah. They’ll “stick around” alright. Like that kid stuck to the flagpole in “A Christmas Story”.

It’ll be Wall Streets fault they’re out there freezing. If it wasn’t for WS there would be no OWS protesters and therefor wouldn’t be out there freezing, right?

There are only (at most) a few hundred protesters at each “occupation” — fewer are actually camping. These are urban encampments, where the protesters mostly live nearby. That’s quite different from mass protests in (say) Washington, where people come from far and wide.

All that would take to continue “occupations”, are sufficient protesters in reserve, to allow for rotations. A total of only 500 protesters could “occupy” a site, with a couple hundred on site, and the rest on R&R in their moms’ basements.

Eleanor Rodham Clift is a bonehead.

I hate to get personal but in her case I will make an exception. She's not only a bonehead but she's an extremely ugly woman.

Liberal women tend to be unattractive but Clift sets a whole new standard of ugly all on her own. And it is solely her physical appearance either. She also projects ugly and mean spiritedness every time she opens her mouth.

Clarence Page is in a dream world. Temporary media coverage makes him think something is happening. The Tea Party changed the conversation about budgets and spending, the OWS’ers will change nothing. They are whiners with loser attitudes, their type is always around, and always eventually ignored because they are based in the negative, and that doesn’t touch the majority of Americans.

Americans look for realistic solutions, we already know that there are problems. The OWS’ers offer no solutions, and no positive energy. So, they will wither, and the short-term attention span of the media will soon move elsewhere, other than to cover the bloodshed when the losers realize it’s over and they have failed, as always.

Old Man Winter just expressed his support of the OWS crowd.

Hippies freezing in the dark, but with a clean, new, coating of ice on them.

PS - ‘bout your tagline. I was always told by my instructor, Capt. Hair, that Seaplane pilots were the highest form of pilots.

But without jobs they will be back, perhaps in a different setting. Maybe joined by other groups with high unemployment like veterans and minorities. There is a unemployment problem ‘goin on out thar’ that green jobs and/or tax plans hold little promise for sooner rather than later results.

Not in the mountains or desert they're not :)

(actually they're called "float planes" but I'm not quibbling)

Most likely there will be less violence in the colder weather. Its the milder weather that makes these looney tunes more unstable especially these outdoor events.

Actually it’s Obama’s fault for not sending in a bunch of FEMA trailers.

They’ll either cry or demand warm stuff or pack up and go home. No staying power when you have no real ideal.
