I hate to think that discussing a smear gives any impression other than I despise the smear. Unfortunately, that's part of the magic of this tactic. It's almost impossible to say anything at all without giving the impression of conceding that there is something to be said - that the people at least met at some point. And yet, even that much has to be proved, or it should be presumed false.
