Why in the world would an 8 year old (boy or girl) have the slightest concern about or even knowledge of gay rights issues?

I would reply the following way: "Well, what does your say about being a homosexual?" When the parent emphatically refutes that remark, then follow-up with "Why are you so defensive?" Then move on.
