Yep. There's been speculation that there are significant methane vents in the "Bermuda Triangle" and they, rather than anything supernatural/alien, are responsible for all the difference there.
There was a program, years ago, that used the tanks at the big US Navy experimentation facility in Carderock, MD to show just how easily a "moderate" (relative to what's actually been observed in nature) methane eruption would have sunk without any trace/wreckage a ship the size/dimensions of the USS Cyclops (one of the "Triangle's" enduring mysteries). Also bring down low-flying aircraft.
