Penn State: Matt McGloin knocked out by teammate

There hasn't exactly been a lot of good news about the Penn State football program in recent months, and the program got a bit more on Saturday. There are multiple reports coming out of State College that quarterback Matt McGloin got into a fight with receiver Curtis Drake following practice on Saturday. A fight that ended with McGloin being knocked out cold.

The details of what happened or what caused the fight are still sketchy at this point, but apparently there was a heated exchange during practice, and when Drake approached McGloin in the locker room after practice, things went downhill. Police were called to the scene to investigate afterward.

From Nittany Lions to the "KNuckle-head" Lions.

Good teamwork: One head offered up to a set of knuckles!

“So NOW they call the police over something someone saw happen in the locker room.”

Gee. Here Penn State players, coaches and officials had always been taught that the Penn State locker room was out of bounds.

All he said was, “Curtis, I want you to be my split end.”?

Throw Paterno out of the college football hall of fame, clearly he falls short of the ethical standard needed to be there.

The Big 10 already took Paterno's name off the Big 10 trophy. Sentiment about JoePa isn't going to get any better as testimony at various criminal and civil trials continue, or grand juries produce indictments, or emails or leaked. Nor if the internal investigation is transparent and being honest about JoePa is helpful to the University.

Hmmm...criminal assault...

Life's tough when you go from doing everything under a tent to in the spotlight. And when you go from having an arrangement where Joe Paterno has carte blanche to decide what acts of football players are punishable - even whether they can be expelled from school (read the leaked emails from the Penn State administrator who quit after the dust-up with Paterno about her not having any authority over football players) - and football players possible not having immunity any longer.

I'm weary of researching Penn State . . . but quarterbacks have it rough there. Since November 5, haven't we learned that this quarterback was involved in a knife fight with another football player that was officially hushed up by Paterno, and officially declared a non-incident by Paterno so that the University Police didn't charge anyone? Anyone remember the facts? I don't want to go through my old posts and if I remember we had to piece this together from multiple news accounts.

I do feel bad for these kids.

Before any of this became a media free-for-all, you already had the McGloin/Bolden conflict.
Last year Bolden tried to get JoePa to release him, and JoePa refused. Can you imagine how he and his family are feeling right about now?

If McGloin is in, and flubs, the crowd starts changing for Bolden. When Bolden is in, and flubs, the crowd starts chanting for McGloin.
The root of the problem probably lies with the coaching of Jay Paterno, who, if it weren’t for his last name - may not have the coaching ability to be there.

So then you throw these kids into this mess - take away 2 coaches -make a GA into a coach. They are hearing the Sandusky jokes - the Lasch building jokes - the Ped State jokes.

I’m sure they’re miserable.

Really. Kill the program, permanently would be best but for at least a decade. Throw Paterno out of the college football hall of fame, clearly he falls short of the ethical standard needed to be there.

FReepers, Rushfans, Nitneymen, lend me your ears;
I come to bury Joe Pa, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Joe Pa. The noble Trustees
Hath told you Joe Pa was ambitious:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Joe Pa answer'd it.
Here, under leave of the Board and the rest -
For the Trustees are honourable men;
So are they all, all honourable men -
Come I to speak in Joe Pa's funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me:
But the Board says he was ambitious;
And the Trustees are honourable men.
He hath brought many wins here to State College
Whose bowl-fees did the general coffers fill:
Did this in Joe Pa seem ambitious?
When that the team had lost, Joe Pa hath wept:
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet the Board says he was ambitious;
And the Trustees are honourable men.
You all did see that on Sportscenter
He was thrice presented a pro contract,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this ambition?
Yet the Board says he was ambitious;
And, sure, they are honourable men.
I speak not to disprove what the Board spoke,
But here I am to speak what I do know.
You all did love him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to mourn for him?
O judgment! thou art fled to brutish beasts,
And men have lost their reason. Bear with me;
My heart is in the coffin there with Joe Pa,
And I must pause till it come back to me.

This is the first I’ve seen the knife fight being attributed to McGloin?

McGloin is a walk-on, and I believe this is his sophomore year.

Articles I’ve read have placed the knife fight a few years ago in a campus dining hall?
I haven’t seen any articles that have identified the players involved.
Not that there aren’t any. I may have just missed it.

Oh, I could be wrong. We're now finding out about so many covered up incidents when the law should have been involved, or players should have been arrested, or they should have been subject to discipline by Penn State, but Joe Paterno got to make the decision about whether law enforcement was involvement, or Penn State (other than football coaches) were involved, that's it's hard to keep the players straight over the last decade. You need a score card and a flash drive with lots of memory.
