Why is it that most people eventually abandon the idea of Santa Claus … and yet so many never abandon belief in an omnipotent government?
Santa Claus is magic. His toy sack never empties, he traverses the globe faster than lightning, his reindeer never tire, his elves never strike, and he’s never too fat for the chimney. Awed by his powers, young kids approach the Jolly One clutching wish lists that itemize the objects of their “unbridled avarice,” as a popular Christmas movie put it.
And why not? Santa’s little supplicants are prodded by plenty of parental encouragement. No toy is beyond the ability of Santa’s elves to build. Nothing Santa gives to one child takes away from what he can give to any other child. Plus, Santa knows who’s been naughty or nice, so the great toy distribution is bound to be fair in some cosmically satisfying way, with everyone getting what they deserve and probably a little bit more. Who wouldn’t want to live in such a world?
Too many adults treat government the way kids treat Santa. But government is not magic. Most adults expect government to provide at least the basics of society like courts, police, defense, roads, mail and schools. Yet these so often seem beyond the reach of government that we may seriously question whether some of them, like schools, should be entrusted to government at all.
Many adults want government to cover everything under Santa’s flying sleigh. Their wish lists say, “subsidize my retirement, my big house, a year’s worth of unemployment, my medicine, my college loans, my electric car, my auto company, my union, my bank, my bad decisions in general, and my ethanol and solar companies.” But unlike Santa’s bottomless bag of toys, every subsidy government gives to someone must first be taken from someone else. For every happy kid there is another whose toy was ripped from his hands.
Adults then may expect that only the deserving ones get the goodies, but the dilemma of fairness inherent in forced redistribution needs no elaboration here. Let’s just say it takes a lot of magic government fairy dust to make it all fair.
My point is not to ridicule those who want government to provide what they believe they deserve, which would be rude and especially out of season at holiday time. Rather, it is to confront the reality of an extremely durable myth — government as Santa Claus — and to prevent belief in that fable from destroying our nation.
Children may be sad to realize there’s no Santa, but Mom and Dad can usually ameliorate that disappointment. No one will rescue us when our collective “unbridled avarice” runs up a debt so high it can never be repaid. All the little children will be crying then.
Belief in Santa is endearing in children. Belief in magic government is sad, tragic and destructive in adults. One of the greatest gifts we can give this holiday season is to help others confront the myth of magic government.
The end result of the Welfare State. Adults who think the government owes them a living paid for by “the rich.” Middle class entitlements that can’t be paid for but that the voters don’t want to cut. At heart its a moral issue. People don’t think they have to be self-sufficient anymore. They don’t think they have any obligation to pay for themselves and their families. Pump out a bunch of kids and can’t afford them? No worries — collect a government check. The idea that kids have an obligation to help with their elderly parents (and that the parents can help the kids in the process) has been rotted away. Its not just Social Security or Medicare that’s a Ponzi Scheme. The whole freakin Welfare State is a Ponzi Scheme that is about to collapse.
I’m never happy to see a white man portraying Santa Claus for this very reason. Makes me cringe every time I see a caucasian Santa. What message are we sending the little children?
Ho ho ho!
Another issue is the middle and upper class liberals who treat the poor as people who need to be taken care of. They promote the idea of Santa Claus Government.
Many Americans have no concept of “Freedom.” They think freedom is having a choice between Medicare part B or part D. They think freedom is the NTSB banning cell phones in cars because it will keep you “safe.”
Maybe we’re just jealous because we don’t have access to Obama’s stash.
Especially in the Minority Community.
That's what Democrat Politicians want. It's their strategy. And it's working very well!
The more Americans view government as Santa Clause, the more money and power they will give to Democrat Politicians--and the richer and more powerful Democrat Politicians become. That's their strategy.
Democrat Politicians are the ruling class.
The average Americans are their serfs.
It's very simple--easy to understand.
Unfortunately it's beyond the comprehension of millions of morons, who vote to keep these vile politicians in power and are incapable of understanding what's going on.
I greatly prefer the look of the Kwanzabot giving out freebees, to the jolly old white guy with the limitless bag of goodies! Santa is not sustainable!
The Democrat Party is the party of slavery, Jim Crow laws, the Ku Klux Klan, segregation, and lynching.
In the 21st century Democrat Politicians elected the Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan, Democrat Senator Robert Byrd, to be the Democrat Party's Majority Leader in the United States Senate! That speaks volumes!
This very year, Democrat Politicians in effect lynched a Black politician who dared to challenge their power--the swiftness, ruthlessness, and efficiency of which should strike terror into the hearts of all Americans!
The Republican Party was founded as the Anti-Slavery Party to oppose the Pro-Slavery Democrat Party!
The Republican Party has consistently fought for justice, liberty, equality of opportunity, and the civil rights of all Americans. The Civil Rights Acts of the 1960s and 1970s were passed by a Congress dominated by Republicans.
Democrat Politicans have not changed their stripes one iota.
Now that Black America is armed with the vote, de facto as well as de jure, Democrat Politicians have altered their strategy a bit, but their hearts are as dark and their policies as self-serving and exploitive as ever.
Their objective also has not changed.
Their objective is still their own personal luxury at the expense of the enslaved. They have merely expanded their population of slaves to include the entire American public and not just Black America.
Their tactics are a bit more subtle than they were before 1865, but their wealth is far greater, and as long as they can convince a gullible public that the Federal Government is Santa Clause and they are his agents, their position will remain secure--and they can enjoy their private jets--lavish vacations--and ENORMOUS personal wealth, secure in the knowledge that millions of morons regularly buy their snake oil and that the American Press serves as their Propaganda Machine, further securing their privileges and advantages.
It's really a quite clever strategy.
You've got to hand it to the Democrat Politicians. They're smarter than the pre-emancipation slave owners. Millions of their slaves are actually keeping them in power
When the welfare state (fedzilla) collapses, it’s going to be chaos. The bottom feeders and parasites that have never contributed a darned thing to society are going to be the worst.
There are a lot of Peter Pans out there who may be over 18 or 21, or even 65, but are not “adults”. They refuse to grow up; and, our government and culture encourages them.
The Founding Fathers expected property and/or wealth requirements to exclude “dependent” persons from voting, since their votes would be controlled by whomever they depended upon. Does it make sense to afford those who cannot manage their own lives a voice in running the nation?
Virtually every aspect of capitalism and thus of economic activity is savagely denounced by large segments of public opinion.On the basis of all their mistaken beliefs about capitalism, people turn to the government for "social justice"; or protection from the evil rich and big business,and economic aid, in the form of labor and social legislation: for reason and order, in the form of government "planning".
