Posted on 12/30/2011 6:05:39 PM PST by Cyber Liberty

I was thinking of trying Chrome operating system on my Parallels app on my Mac. Where do I find a download?

Maybe, if you trust Google to not snoop around. I don’t.

I doubt it. Chrome OS is basically just the Chrome browser with a few apps. I do not trust Google not to spy on me and I avoid their products as much as possible.

I can't answer for how good / bad it is, but it is available native for the Mac - no Parallels needed.

Here's the link: https://www.google.com/chrome?platform=mac

Yup, Google gives it away free because they are advertising company. They want your info to resell.

"Is it even worth my effort?"

No. It most certainly is not. First, it is not a separate OS. It is built on the Linux OS, and "Chrome OS only ships on specific hardware from Google's manufacturing partners."

It is primarily built for those who only use a computer to surf the net. It's a browser, media player and file manager only.

If you like a minimalist system with few features and LOTS of bugs, have at it.

I agree - I loaded it on a virtual machine and it was terrible.

From what I can see, it’s just another Linux distro, and all I end up caring about is the desktop environment anyway. They all have KDE, so what’s the big deal? The couple of sites I looked at with downloads want money, and they can go to Hell.

I love XFCE. First ran it under Redhat 8.0. More recently using it under Xubuntu 11.04 Much prefer it to Gnome's desktop or KDE. Have used Linux of some flavor since 1995. Started with a UMSDOS version of Slackware.

I got it stuck on my computer earlier this year by not watching what I was agreeing to.

It was a bitch to get rid of it and it continued to leave a Chrome icon on my web page that was also a problem to remove.

Nowadays if I have a choice between “automatic” or “custom” download I always choose custom and usually find the automatic will stick unwanted toolbars (Yahoo, etc) into my system.

Caveat Emptor!!!!

First off, ChromeOS sucks., it sucks on a fundamental level.

From inside a Linux OS you can compile it yourself,
directions:
http://www.chromium.org/chromium-os/developer-guide

or you can go here and download a optimized version called Hexxeh Vanilla: comes in usb bootable, virtualbox image, and i guess you can install it to a hdd if you hate yourself enough.

Are these guys stuck in the ‘90’s? If I want a headache, well, isn’t that what SUSE is for? I am so confused....

Yes! because we all know Microsoft and Apple are above suspicion and would never spy on us, it’s only those naughty guys from Google that would do that.

Bingo! I don’t trust Google. I use Ixquick, which does not collect IP addresses.

No doubt Microsoft and Apple both spy a bit too. But the difference is that they are software and hardware vendors. Google doesn’t make anything. They sell ads. They have much greater motivation to invade the privacy of computer users, and do so on a regular business. I think the only worse offender is Facebook, who also doesn’t make anything except money by selling your personal data.
