I was one who never thought that I would need a gun to protect myself, till I found out that was wrong.
Living in rural Wyoming you don’t expect it. I always carried my weapon when I went through Denver, surely I might need it there but not in Wyoming. Ha

Living out in rural Wyoming, I would imagine you would need at least a 9mm for wandering, methed up freaks and at least a .44 mag for wildlife. Aren't there occasional grizzly sightings in Wyoming? Hell, I would be open carrying a 500 mag or a 45-70 rifle whenever I traveled around outdoors if anybody ever mentioned they saw a grizz in my state.
