I increasingly thing the GOP “strategy” is to present a NE liberal politician so that they can presumably capture centrist democrat voters who along with moderate republicans can elect the next President and preserve the status quo.

Then again, ignoring the conservative wing and imploring them to “hold their nose” has been a hallmark of GOP “strategy” for the last 6 presidential election cycles, and is again likely for the next 6.

Yep, preserving the status quo is all they really care about—which is why empty suits like McCain and Romney get the nom, because they can be depended on as malleable tools.

Neither the Democrat or Republican plantations want a real game-changer in office who’d upset the usual collusion of venality and parasitism that keeps the political establishment churning.
