Mitt Romney today stands on the brink of becoming the Republican candidate to challenge Barack Obama for the presidency of the U.S.
But it could have been so different for the former Mormon missionary when he was almost killed in a car accident in Bernos-Beaulac, France, in 1968.
The 21-year-old was driving from Pau to Bordeaux when he was hit by a car driven by a Catholic priest, which killed one of his own passengers.

Mormons have this policy of “lying for the Lord”. The idea is to never do anything to make “the Church” look bad, and that goes even further when it comes to missionaries who are considered ‘ambassadors’ for the LDS church in many ways. Add to that their disdain (esp back then) of Catholics and yea, I can totally see them lying to protect Mitt (who is LDS ‘royalty’). I can also see them being threatened by their ecclesiastical leaders (again not that uncommon) if they didn’t do what they were told.
I used to be Mormon and I saw it first hand, I even did it.
Like I said, based on my experiences (and other freepers experiences) I would not be surprised in the least that these people lied (or were lied to) about what happened to protect a ‘priesthood holder’.
The constant lying to protect ‘the Church’ is one of the reasons I left. They don’t just lie to outsiders, but their own members as well if it furthers their goals.
Newt has served his for years. If you are speaking of the military he received a medical deferment, lots of people did.
Whatever floats your boat. I think I’m starting to see Teflon growing.
Playing is right.
He said just recently that the 2+ years he was there NOT ONE person was converted to lds.
He did manage to travel around Europe, live in Paris and get in two car accidents however.
Just like in European Vacation. “Arc d’Triomphe, kids!”
A deferment is a deferment in the military. Neither Newt or Mitt served during Vietnam. Also both have served their Country. Bashing any candidate by using a fatal accident is abhorable imo
Lots of people did not serve in Nam.
The accident is bigger than the accident.
What people are questioning is how the information about what happened is being handled.
People get in accidents, people die, people get hurt....
there are conflicting accounts of the accident, it was not his first one by the way.
George Romney sent a team to disseminate information to make sure is son was placed in a good light - that is what people are wondering about.
George Romney and the higher ups in SLC involvement make the situation which maybe as simple as a bad accident into something else.
People want to know what that something else is.
If you are comfortable with Romney’s account great, just leave it at however there are people who would like to know what were these people trying to smooth over, if there was nothing why expend so much energy in doing so.
HA HA HA
Boy, the hidden MittBots are out in full force. Sign up date of 2004 is common.
Can’t believe I never noticed that a young Rick Perry is in
the picture, front row, far right~
Yes.
New tagline
These “almost died violently in his youth” stories about powerful men always have a creepy Stephen King feel to them.
Precisely!
If you read accounts on lds sites about this accident, people will say -
that Romney died and came back to life;
that people died, he was spared with only a broken arm and the break was just below his garment sleeve;
the priest was so drunk he didn’t know what he was doing and Romney saved as many people as he could by defensive driving;
that he had to be extracted from the car with the jaws of life, he was pronounced dead at the scene but came back to life......
really the accounts are laughable and you are correct creepy.
I have heard but cannot confirm that one in four Frenchmen die in traffic accidents. I was once hit by a car myself in a crosswalk in Paris. The driver who hit me was screaming at me in French till I got pissed off (I wasn't hurt) and approached his side of the car - zoom, away he went (there may have been a white flag out his window, I don't recall). The only nationality that is worse are the Belgians (according to a Belgian police officer of my past acquaintance).
So if I had to bet who was in the wrong, a 21 year old from Michigan or a French priest, it's no contest. And ditto on the political comment too. I will not vote for Mr. Romney in my State's primary but if he's the nominee I will do everything in my power to make sure Obama is not reelected.
Romney was avoiding the draft, he was issued a deferment by his own religion and sent to hide out in France while his father fought to become the anti-war president of the United States, the Presidential candidate could hardly afford to have his son here.
Mitt’s father didn’t serve either, no Romney man has ever served this nation in uniform, they have a perfect 170 year record and nothing including military drafts or patriotism has ever been able to get one.
Mitt now claims that he “longed” to serve in Vietnam.
People have to hear Mitt’s history before they can tune it out, as you claim.
Do you know what result the Reagan Revolution had on Mitt Romney?
I agree with your analysis. People think the Dums are sitting around waiting. They already have started their plan of attack on Mittens. And it’s going to get ugly.
