If it had further corroboration then it might invite more scrutiny. I know Chris Matthews repeated the claim that Obama was born in Indonesia (Dec 18, 2007 I think.) but this might be just confusion as you describe above, caused by not understanding something Obama said correctly.
My recollection is that prior to 2006, I kept hearing that Obama was born in Kenya. The timeline and logistics of it just don't work.
All these claims are more than likely mistakes, but when the excuses for the mistakes are weak, then I reserve final judgment because there are just too many holes throughout the Obama backstory to assume what the real truth is. I think it’s possible that Obama has told different stories to different people ... it could be a pathological problem or part of agenda to win friendship or admiration from certain groups of people. And usually, somewhere in the lies are some kernels of truth that have to be pieced together to get the true story. The other question is where does this bad historical information come from? The Honolulu reporter said he found the Indonesia thing on the Internet, but where?? Who would have been saying back then that Obama was born in Indonesia?? If it came from Duckworth, that makes sense. And Matthews could have gotten it from the Duckworth story. We just don’t know. Why are there so many different years for when SAD married Soetoro?? Why was Obama different ages when they moved to Indonesia?? And then, why does Spokesbabe Okubo volunteer a city in Indonesia ... of all places ... for her example?? It’s almost too much just to be a coincidence.
