My son is going to Marine Corps OCS (Proud Pappa Vanity!!)

And I share the news with Free Republic because this is a good thing for America.

I have heard a lot of folks talking about abandoning the military in light of the DADT Obama fiasco.

I, for one, am proud that my son well understands and lives the Core Values and that he will be there to uphold them in the Corps in a position of authority, with God's help.

Congrats to you and your son. Tell him not to worry about Obama. Presidents come and go. I served when Jimmy Carter was President and we replaced him with Ronald Reagan. Things have a way of working out and mistakes corrected.

A most amazing (and humbling) experience from his short time in the Corps (Reserve) is something an old Gunny I work with told me when he enlisted. He told me, “You are a part of the family. You will find out what that means.”

I’ve gotten little glimpses of that and my heart swells up every time.

When my number three son joined the Corps out of High School, I was very, very impressed by the family oriented values that seemed so predominant in communications that I received from those responsible for his training.

Moreover, his six year stint proved very constructive, in helping him to focus, when he later proved a straight A student in his four year undergraduate work in College. It was not that he did not have sound family & patriotic values before--had he not such values he would never have enlisted;--but he was not always so well focused to long term purpose.

I hope that your son finds the Corps experience as worthwhile, and returns to you safe & sound, with the satisfaction of having served to a higher purpose than many of his classmates, who never felt tbe call.

My son also joined the Reserves out of high school, which followed nine grades of home school. When he told me he wanted to join the Corps, I asked him, “Why not the Navy, Air Force....?”

His answer silenced me, “I want to be the best.” He also realized his own need for discipline, direction and purpose. That he has found in the Corps. I sent a good boy to Parris Island three years ago. They sent back a good man.
