Santorum actually opposed individual mandate in 1994 race for U.S. Senate
Daily Caller ^ | January 27, 2012 | Jeff Poor

As the race for the Republican presidential nomination has reached a point where opposition research has hit a fever pitch, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum is discovering that even he isn’t immune from vicious political attacks.

A Washington Examiner piece by Joel Gehrke reported Friday that Santorum supported individual health mandates, citing a 1994 The Morning Call (Pa.) story. But as The Right Scoop blog pointed out on Friday, the article “doesn’t even quote Santorum as supporting the individual mandate.”

Running for the U.S. Senate in 1994, however, Santorum actually said just the opposite of that, as a video from CSPAN shows. The Oct. 31, 1994 video has Santorum saying government shouldn’t “dictate” anything on health care.

“I think what the role of the federal government is to provide opportunity for everyone to get what they want, to live their dreams and not to dictate what everybody should have,” he said.

And he explained why, which is even when certain things are mandated by the federal government, they often don’t work and added it simply is “not the American way of doing things.”

Someone actually bothered to check into the hit piece this morning from Joel Gehrke, i.e.; the Romney Campaign, in the Washington Examiner. What is the bet that WaEx gives a retraction or apology for shoddy journalism?

Probably not much chance of that happening since Santorum left Florida to go back home.

I'd say slim to none. This kind of thing is exactly why I do my own research and ignore pretty much anything the candidates say about each other.

“I think what the role of the federal government is to provide opportunity for everyone to get what they want, to live their dreams and not to dictate what everybody should have,” he said

“You can’t force every American to do something they don’t want to do,” Santorum explained. “You can force people to be in Social Security, yet I think it’s only about 96 percent of Americans that are in Social Security. There are lots of mandates we put on people and they don’t obey. That’s wrong. That’s not the American way of doing things. The American way of doing things is getting people to live their dreams to make their choices.” Rick Santorum 1994 senatorial debate

"Santorum is discovering that even he isn’t immune from vicious political attacks."

LOL. Santorum has been the subject of the most vicious political attacks for a long time now, from the most vicious demographic of the far left.

I still have a teensy weensy song of hope in my heart.

As I watch the “frontrunners” draw blood, I am thankful he has hung in there.

The three week period will be very telling.

The only thing that can take out Newt - is Newt.
And he is more than capable of that.

Rick is the tortoise - and I like the ending to that fable.

.

Santorum needs to put his ego aside, place his country before himself, drop out and go back to wherever he came from.

Rick Perry is twice the Conservative Santorum is!
He deserves the VP slot.

Since 2000 he has led the second largest state in the union on to be the most successful economically.

Perry stated that in his administration he would start all countries getting U.S. foreign aid at ZERO, until they proved to be our allies.

He was also the first to bring the war on religion to the forefront.

The prevailing wisdom here is that he can’t beat Obama.
I don’t think I believe that.
Rino McCain was pretty close to O in the polls right up until the financial crisis.
I would guess Santorum would fare better than McCain - especially now that the “glow” has faded from Obamalamadingdong.

He doesn’t look very intimidating in that sweater vest though.
He could be pretty easy on the eyes - and look more presidential - if somebody got him into a spiffy suit.

I checked the language of the amendment patriot08 cites saying Santorum voted to give or extend benefits to illegal aliens. It turns out it is an amendment that changes dates and punctuation, mandating changes from commas to semicolons and was voted for by all but about 4 senators. It was a tiny amendment to a huge bill that addressed a huge range of topics that are all lumped together and was clearly procedural. To frame this as a vote by Santorum that supports him giving benefits to illegals is dis-ingenious at best and purposefully misleading at worst.

I don't really care. My opposition of Santorum is based on philosophical grounds, mainly due to Santorum's own beliefs and described in his own words.

Some of those beliefs which Santorum supports... and I find morally and ethically repugnant are:

Santorum, from 2008:

This whole idea of personal autonomy, well I don’t think most conservatives hold that point of view. Some do. They have this idea that people should be left alone, be able to do whatever they want to do, government should keep our taxes down and keep our regulations low, that we shouldn’t get involved in the bedroom, we shouldn’t get involved in cultural issues. You know, people should do whatever they want. Well, that is not how traditional conservatives view the world and I think most conservatives understand that individuals can’t go it alone.

And directly from his book 'It Takes a Family: Conservatism and the Common Good'...

What was my vision? I came to the uncomfortable realization that conservatives were not only reluctant to spend government dollars on the poor, they hadn’t even thought much about what might work better. I often describe my conservative colleagues during this time as simply ‘cheap liberals.’ My own economically modest personal background and my faith had taught me to care for those who are less fortunate, but I too had not yet given much thought to the proper role of government in this mission.

...and...

I suspect some will dismiss my ideas as just an extended version of ‘compassionate conservatism.’ Some will reject what I have said as a kind of ‘Big Government Conservatism.’ Some will say that what I’ve tried to argue isn’t conservatism at all. But I believe what I’ve been presenting is the genuine conservatism our Founders envisioned. One that fosters the opportunity for all Americans to live as we are called to live, in selfless families that contribute to the general welfare, the common good.

I was glad to hear Mark Levin cover this on his radio show to millions, and millions, of listeners.

But you never said WHY he voted the way he did. One poster already exposed one of your copy and pastes.

Also, half truths are ONLY posting what you consider to be bad votes. You are cherry picking. Folks can see through this.

Now I’ll post some DEFINITE good votes, screened by Club for Growth:

“Santorum has consistently supported broad-based tax cuts and opposed tax increases either by sponsoring key legislation or by casting votes on relevant bills. Some high profile votes include:

•Voted NO on the Clinton tax hike in 1993
•Voted YES on the capital gains tax cut in 1997
•Voted NO on a cigarette tax hike in 1998
•Voted YES on repeal of the Alternative Minimum Tax in 1999
•Voted YES on the 2001 Bush tax cuts
•Voted YES to repeal the Death Tax in 2002
•Voted YES to the 2003 Bush tax cuts
•Voted YES to extend the Bush tax cuts in 2006”
