15-Year-Old Student Bullied for Supporting Biblical View of Family

Shawano, WI – Liberty Counsel is representing the Wegner family after school officials at Shawano High School censored and punished Brandon Wegner, a 15-year-old, for writing an op-ed article explaining the Biblical view of homosexuality and supporting natural mother-father adoption. Liberty Counsel sent a letter to the school demanding it apologize for its unconstitutional and irrational censorship and humiliation of Brandon.

Brandon quoted several verses from the Bible regarding homosexuality. After Brandon wrote this article he was pulled into hours of meetings with school administrators and staff, without his parents’ knowledge. This caused him to miss exam preparation classes and at least one exam. Brandon was hauled before the superintendent on charges that he had violated the school’s bullying policy. Superintendent Todd Carlson told him that the column “went against the bullying policy,” and asked him if he “regretted” writing it. When Mr. Wegner stated that he did not regret writing it, and that he stood behind his beliefs, Superintendent Carlson told him that he “had got to be one of the most ignorant kids to try to argue with him about this topic,” that “we have the power to suspend you if we want to” and that the column had “personally offended me, so I know you offended other people!”

Brandon’s opinion was a part of an editorial page which presented viewpoints both for and against homosexual adoption, each articulated by students. After the school newspaper was published in the local town paper, a homosexual in the community complained to the school. School officials then censored Brandon's article forcing him and his classmates to pull the page out of the newspaper before distribution at the school. In a statement, the school “sincerely apologized” – not for allowing the topic to begin with, but only for the Biblical viewpoint presented by Brandon. The First Amendment protects the opinions of all, including student journalists.

Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel, said “The bullying at Shawano High School is by Superintendent Todd Carlson and the school officials, not the student, Brandon Wegner. The school officials have displayed blatant intolerance of a view on homosexuality held by many people. The school’s actions are shocking and unjustified. The superintendent should immediately apologize and stop the bullying.”

I know this isn't biblical but I was walking home from Junipero Serra( back around when they built it , Old mission, SJC back in the orange picking days a mite after 1776) and some bullies took my pplaster of paris cross, tossed it in the air and it broke in a thousand pieces. Thing was our mother had barely a year to live from breat cancer that spread through her body( 1966).

Soooo, one day the same kids actually smashed into each other with their bikes and I'd grown up a little. First they were angry so I used a hose on them until I realized one had an ankle sorta broken( really brokem in the other guys spokes) and the othjer guy had a broken collar bone. Needless to say I hadn't read "vengeance is mine thus saith the Lord,"yet. Seems they were kinda more hurt as I wrapped a rope around my bike to theirs and sorta pulled them home screaming all the way.

Adding injury to injury the biggest of the dufus patrol I met at Ft bragg where one had to qualify beofre going on to the special forces units. Can you believe after all that time he still had serious anger problems? Sure enough he was in my bunk and just as much an a-hole as when he was a child. I didn't have to do a thing then as the drill sarges and other instuctors put this ghuy in his place and I don't know if anyone saw "the wall, about a forty foot high end over end bunch of logs to the sky. He was scared of heights and mashed himself but good on the other side. This time he broke two vertebraes in his back

I visited him in the infirmry. I gave him a bible that was promptly tossed across the room and near hit a nurse a captain that read him the riot act, no pain meds for him that day. Then about two weeks later as he went back to ordnance ( rec'd orders, he wasn't out yet) he was balling like a baby. Seems he reasd a psalm that broke his heart and had a come to Jesus moment. Then told me his friend who used to blast me so much died wih a needle in his arm

Long story short? We NEED to stand up for this kid. If I lived closer I woulld accept being his body guard or teach( free of course) him martial arts( time consuming though) and help him. He's a brave child and does NOT deserve what all this humanism bunk "freedom from religion instead of "freeedom OF religion as such states in our constiution( as some smarty wrote above. God bless this child. He's too young for the wrath of the hell that will be visited upon America in the next couple years should this religious persecution continue. But it will, possibly like the ME or Nigerias Boku Harem. Let's pray please for more maturity than my endeavor at revenge because soon I fear we'll have to fight to save our way of life, our families, friends and neighbors.
