I’m a neo-viking. I bought a fixer-upper sailboat w a diesel, cheap, 5 years ago and moved aboard...Right now I sit in a Florida river with excellent fishing, waterfowl flyways and swamps infested with alligator and pigs. I could hopscotch throughout the southeast and find hundreds of other such likely spots away from the more urban zones. If it turns into a zombie-fest, I’ve always wanted to check out the Pacific..tools, seeds and chem fertilizer will go with me, and maybe even a couple breeding potbelly pigs. I’ll go where people ain’t and do my semiannual trading where they’re few. That’s the basic plan...

” True and I am very sure several were quite serious about it. “
Yep - and I also get the impression that they were very young, and maybe had seen one too many Mel Gibson movies..
;)
BTW - I watched the “Jeremiah” series (available on HULU.com) and got some interesting insights into what a post-SHTF culture might look like.... (It’s 35 1-hour episodes, and a darned good story, so set aside a weekend for it... ;))

Sounds like if worse comes to worse, you’d be doing the neighborhood a favor if you just shot him first.

Even with some areas that had legitimate local militias, there was no way to muster enough willing souls to hold off organized Dragoons raids when the raiders numbered over about 50. Bingo. Way, way too many preppers live in a macho fantasy world.
They really think that with them at the front door with a .45, and Uncle Jed at the back door with a shotgun, they'll be able to hold off a starving world.

Are you sure you’re not referring to Jericho? If so there were a lot more episodes than I though.

Some of us who store food are not only familiar with guns, but also poisons . . . .
And there's always the old “Quarantined” sign as one layer of the “defense onion”.

Here, outside Philadelphia, the threat used to be the zombie hoards; now it is the extremely well armed “russian” immigrants. But we know that, and are suitably prepared.

While guns are the great equalizer, his violent instincts are so sharp, an armed grandma would have a hard time contending. He knows that and would be likely to choose his targets carefully. After grandma and little granddaughter triangle in on him, all his guns will belong to them.

Essentially, long-term survival will require the reconstruction of society. This is very important. I preach this every time conversation turns to "when TSHTF". There are so many skills necessary to maintain even an 1800's life style that people need to channel their energies into presevation of neighbors sooner than later. "Later" means plunging back into some really dark times.

No - it’s definitely “Jeremiah”... I found it quite by accident while browsing Hulu.com, and have watched it a number of times - the first couple of times for plot (it’s a heckuva yarn) and story, and then afterwards for the really well-thought-through background details..

Personally, I found “Jericho” to be somewhat disappointing... ;)

Better to have a network of mutual support and defense as well as a low profile if possible. While the word is repulsive to conservatives, a degree of collectivization would probably be required till things settled down.

in a SHTF scenario... power will be out, unless you supply your own.
You can get
these. They are very effective. Three D cells last about a year. Plan your locations and range them. You can also get some of
these .
