I’m convinced most Santorum supporters weren’t aware of his existence until after Florida. That’s how he got away with the whole “above it all” meme he himself pushed, even while releasing anti-Newt ads like this one:
“The Florida results are in and despite spending millions Newt Gingrich went form a big lead to a big defeat. Why? Because voters discovered Gingrich wasn’t a true conservative. Like Romney, Gingrich supported the Wall Street bailout, job-killing cap and trade, and radical healthcare mandates. Gingrich even supports giving some illegals amnesty,”
But Santorum rose above the bickering, of course:

If you remember that is exactly what Newt did in the Michigan debate while Santorum was explaining the ins and outs of Senate votes, and confessing he had “taken one for the team”. He took King’s ridiculously premised questions, reframed them, and hammered Obama. IMO the Michigan debate will go down in history as the turning point for Newt’s resurgence.
