Kony 2012 And The Explosion In Social Media
Grand Rants ^ | 03-09-12 | Gerry Ashley

Imagine you come upon a child under 10 years old who, along with his friends, is in obvious distress. Now imagine, when you ask that child what you can do to help him, he turns to you and says, with all seriousness, “It is better if you can kill us…”

What in the name of all that is holy could cause a child that young so much stress and fear in his life, that given a choice, he would have you kill him as an act of kindness?

Meet Jacob, the unsuspecting star of Youtube’s most viral video to date (It’s closing in on 50 million views).

Through the new social medias (blogs, Facebook, Twitter etc.) intercommunication between people representing all nationalities, races, religions etc. has opened up possibilities limited only by our imaginations. The imagination of a young man named Jason Russell has initiated what may be the most ambitious yet potentially controversial experiment involving this emerging application of technology. The goal? To bring down the man who, according to the International Criminal Court in The Hague tops their list of the world’s worst criminals. His name: Joseph Kony. His crime? Abducting thousands of children and forcing them to become soldiers in his rebel army.

For over 20 years, children in central Africa like Jacob have lived in fear of being captured by the Kony’s rebel army. The second goal is to reunite thousands of young children with their parents. The deadline? THIS YEAR. And, although it might sound crazy, they might just pull it off.

And then there’s this: http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2012/03/07/guest_post_joseph_kony_is_not_in_uganda_and_other_complicated_things

As I mentioned in the post, we must all do our own vetting. I don’t question, for a moment that the movie has its share of fact-stretching, but it doesn’t lessen the horror faced by Jacob and the others.

However this turns out, it still stands that the use of the social media is the most powerful tool out there... for good or evil. It just means that it’s even more necessary than ever to vet everything we see or read.

Now you understand the concept of the “immaculate intervention”.

Kony has NOT been in Uganda since 2006! They believe he is in the Central African Republic, if he is still alive! They film makers are 6 yrs too late in releasing this!!! They need money!

What I find so funny is the difference in opinions between those actually serving in the military and their peers here at home. The FB posts from my sons and their friends in the military are the complete opposite of everyone elses. The common theme, “If you want military action, then sign up yourself” They are also quick to point out that while Kony is a bad man, why were y’all so upset about us taking out Saddam Hussein. I will take the wisdom of our young troops over the the brainiacs here in a minute!

Two points in response:

1.) The article clearly states we should all vet things ourselves and not depend on others to do so for them.

2.) As noted in a reply to the link you provided: “I think people are ignoring the fact that half of what IC does is create awareness, and that part is free. You don’t have to donate to IC to tell the world that there is a man acting like Hitler in the middle of Africa. Regardless of who spreads awareness, this guy needs to go. Critics are missing the forest for the trees.”

I agree, but no-one is asking us to “go bankrupt.” This is more about creating awareness, and that part is free. You don’t have to donate to IC to tell the world that there is a madman Africa. Regardless of who spreads awareness, this guy needs to go.

I don't think you will find many people here who were upset about taking out Saddam Hussein.

I don’t think this is about the name of his army. It’s about what he has done to children for over 20 years. If your house was on fire, would you stop the firemen to first establish if their motive was to put out the fire or roast marshmallows?

This isn’t about lefties or righties. It’s about awareness, and an invitation to those who would like to be part of the solution. That’s OK, I’ll put you down as more interested in the secret agenda and let it go at that.

Almost all of Africa is run by "Mad Men."

I never thought I would say this, but I think the administration is trying to establish a presence in this area, and I don’t think it will benefit the US one bit, and may lead to another humanitarian crises for us to “fix.”

I originally thought it was to get control of the oil and other rare earth elements present, especially in the DRC, but now I also think it is to stifle the success of the forces fighting the Muslim insurgents in South Sudan.

China already has there hands in Africa big time with all the funds in the world to invest. They are tying up assets, resources, and building infrastructure throughout the region.

Under Obama, the sun is setting on the US as the beacon of freedom and democracy everywhere.

I wonder whose side we are going to be on?

And lest ye think, I don’t care about Africa, I have said many times that the most damning thing about the Clinton Presidency was the inaction he took, along with the UN, during the Rwandan Holocaust in 1994.

Is noted in the original article, We DO urge all to vet things on their own... and to share that info as it is uncovered.

Not sure what you mean when you right “As most people know by now... Mr. Kony is no longer a real threat.”

That’s just plain ridiculous. Just because he is out of Uganda and slithered under some rock elsewhere in Africa doesn’t mean he doesn’t pose a threat. He is a mad man ON THE RUN. That probably makes him more dangerous than ever. Talk about checking your FACTS before posting...

But posting false information is counterproductive, and this video makes people feel good by voting on the internet, but it doesn’t help one living and breathing soul with a beating heart.

In fact it hurts because the information contained in it is so wrong that it is like saying donate to me, because Hitler is bad.

It is taking advantage of white guilt and giving people the false and self-centered feeling that they are helping by caring and by pressing “like” on facebook.

This is exactly the kind of attitude that we don’t need to help the people in this region.

Big,

I actually feel suckered by that video. When my son showed it to me, I fell for it and forwarded to my friends and reposted it facebook.

I then overcame my emotions and decided to check into it a little. I immediately began to have doubts about the organization and now about how much at threat Kony still is.

Honestly, while watching the video, some of it gave me the uneasy feeling that this was some type of OWS type organizing. Get the young people energized on something inconspicuous, then shift them to another target like US industries. Maybe, I am just paranoid.

BTW, my son found it from a link that Mark Hall, youth Pastor and lead singer for “Casting Crowns” had posted. It seems he was suckered, too. Conservatives want to help and want to do what is right. We want to Love. Sometimes, that sets us up for con-men or confidence men.

I think this is as much about awareness as anything, and that part is free.

Nobody is suggesting we invade Uganda. He’s probably not in that country any longer. The point is to spread the awareness all over the world so no matter where he goes to try to hide, he will be recognized, seized and brought to trial (or executed).

I’m sorry, but you are wrong, largely because you are unable to place this bad man’s situation in the correct context for all that is going on in the region.

No one approves of this man, but the problems in Uganda are no longer caused by this guy. He is still an issue, but he is not the problem that he once was.

You need to update your information. Your point of view would have been far more accurate if opined 6 years ago or more.

History has moved on from your knowledge.

Not here...it was in response to those in college who have criticized the war by those who are fighting.
