I think it does not have to do so much with continuing education costs as it does an active license incurs liability when dealing with people much as a doctor who is not on duty.
As an officer of the court there are certain responsibilities in certain situations for declaring that you are a lawyer such as say entering a contract for investment or forming partnerships.
There is also liability insurance to maintain.
To avoid potential conflicts with implied responsibilities it is best to become inactive.
What a beautifully written post, Spaulding. You eloquently summed up what we all have to acknowledge is the truth.
I would add that Mr. Donofrio most likely is preparing for what will follow as the American Republic disintegrates. We all should be thinking along those lines.

"That was a nice thing for Spaulding to do.The fact is I can renew my license anytime I like. I am going on inactive status, but I am still an attorney and can be active simply by paying a small fee.
But I hope I never do take it up again. I am going to write and direct feature films... My current feature just won the grand prize at a film festival.
I have not been threatened and this has nothing to do with Breitbart or fear. I believe that my research has been exhausted and that I've made the case that Obama, McCain and Rubio are not eligible. The jurists who tried to take on my research in Indiana and Georgia made fools of themselves in public to protect their overlords. The more I say about the issue now, just weakens the power of the work I've done. I don't feel the need to repeat myself over and over. My blog will stay up as is.
You may repeat these comments to the FR board. And I hope you do.
