The problem with the 1940 campaign was that Wilkie did not appear to grasp the coming wars (US involvement) in Asia and Europe.

Both Roosevelt and Wilkie ran as anti-war candidates, just as Wilson did in 1916. 86% of the population was against fighting in 1940 because they thought that the Russians and the Germans could destroy each other. The America First movement was very popular before Pearl Harbor.
