Why did the DHS just order 450 million rounds of .40 caliber ammunition?

Because they may need to kill A LOT of people.

LOL, did you check the second article above? The 1.4 billion rounds the Lake City plant produces for the government each year is about to go ‘green’- non lead.
http://www.armytimes.com/news/2008/11/ap_greenammo_110708/

They are going to a ‘bismuth alloy’.

I’m in no mood for civil unrest or martial law, I’m having a personal crisis at the moment. :-)

LOL! That's enough rounds to kill every man, woman and child in this country, and shoot the big ones several thousands times each.

Seems like a lot of ammo for an agency which is seldom, if ever involved in a gun fight.

I mean, I like to eat, but I sure in hell don't need 3,000 head of steer in the back yard.

Let me guess. The only source for bismuth is China?

Nice to see the list of countries that can hold our ammunition supply hostage.

Well, with all that surplus money just lying around, the government needs to spend it on something. Biggest seller of the season seems to be guns and ammo. They’re flying off the shelves. And they might as well beat the last minute Christmas crush. You know. Get it before its gone.

I don’t depend on reporters, but I don’t pay much attention to paranoid bloggers, either. Do you really have no clue what I am talking about? These purchases are a matter of public record every year. It is not a state secret. It is called “procurement.” Lots of government agencies do it. A halfway competent writer would have looked up the history to see if a purchase of this much ammunition is out of the ordinary, or if it tracks with what has been purchased in past years. There is this search engine called “Google” .... As it stands, this report is an isolated set of facts signifying nothing. Writer/blogger was lazy. Please note dates...

We will see Obama’s dream of a civilian security apparatus as powerful as the military come true if he is re-elected. That is his real “jobs plan”, for those who will comply.

Yes, we know lots of government agencies do it.

It's like that when they use other people's money.

Even when they're broke, bankrupt and 14 trillion in the hole!

Who shoots with .40 caliber? That’s just squirrel shot. Fifty caliber is the way to go; especially when used in a EDM Arms Semi-Auto Model 05, the most accurate .50 caliber on the market.

"I guess I need to go buy some more ammo tomorrow."

You're probably right. Sadly I lost all my guns in a boating accident. The wife left the gun bag in the dingy we were towing to Catalina Island. Whole bag musta popped out on the way over. I'm still heartbroken about it......

Alliant Techsystems does most of the bigger stuff while smaller calibers like pistol calibers are standard suppliers like S&W.
