What do I have to do to erase Windows 7 and install a newly purchased OEM copy of Windows XP Professional?

Try Thunderbird for your mail, it works OK. Really easy set up.

“Do you have an old ME floppy?

FDISK!!”

Don’t think so but I no longer have a compute with a floppy drive.

I do have my old copy of ME on CD.

Not likely, HP will probably suggest a work around that will only allow limited printer function with some features crippled. It is a crappy solution.

That depends on what you do with your computer.

It’ll probably boot into a DOS type mode and you should then be able to run FDISK.

Assuming, of course, that you have already saved what you want/can off of the hard drive...

Good luck! All my machines are configured for dual boot at least, some even have Linux partitions on them.

Just for the record. The copy of XP OEM that you bought is still illegal. The only legal use of an OEM license is that it must come from the Original Equipment Manufacturer(OEM). If you bought a Dell computer with Windows 7 on it, you cannot legally buy an OEM copy of the license yourself and install it.

That's funny. At Fry's, they sell tons of OEM copies of Windows to Mac owners - they just make sure you buy some kind of PC computer hardware along with it.

After doing this for 3 Macs, I now have quite the collection of case thumbscrews!

if its not connected to the internet and doesn’t need to interface with the latest interconnect schemes, run Windows 95 if you want.

but if you have a network facing system you’d better be able to support decent lockdown and security tools and
the world as we know it has moved on, like it or not, from support for the legacy XP.

what’s au courant in Linux distros these days? one can barely keep up...

Color printers are cheap - you would have been better off upgrading the printer than downgrading your OS. You will soon regret what you are doing.

He is the OEM. He's repairing and recycling hardware that was broken by Windows 7. Got it? End of story.

What model printer do you have?

Also, it is important to find out if XP drivers are available for your computer’s hardware.

It’s an OKI C3200.

I’ve downloaded the drivers from Okidata and Windows 7 flat won’t accept it.

If you install XP, make sure you immediately install all updates including Service Pack 3.

Microsoft will end extended support for XP SP3 on April 8, 2014. If you are connected to the Internet, best of luck keeping the bad guys out of your computer after that date.

Are you sure you can't get the printer to work under Win7? What's the model number?

1. Download and burn a copy of System Rescue CD.

2. Make sure you have all important data backed up.

3. Boot SRCD with default values, then type "startx" to get into the graphical user interface. On difficult systems that will not launch it, type "wizard" at the prompt and choose an alternate method.

4. Mouse over to the bottom icons until one "gparted" shows, then click to launch.

5. Make sure your default hard drive is selected (usually identified as 'sda', or 'sha' on older systems), then delete all partitions and click the 'apply' button to proceed.

Note: THIS WILL PERMANENTLY DELETE YOUR USABLE O.S. SO PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK. ALL RESPONCEABILITY IS YOUR OWN.

Boot with your WinXP CD and it will detect no installed OS and proceed normally. Have fun!

Oh, please don’t make me look at at apple. “They never crash.” Hah! Ok, so maybe the beachball of death is not a crash but you lose all your work so what is the difference.

I am amazed at the times I’ve had power go out or even if my PC decides it needs a hard boot and all my work is still there. Sorry, just NOT a mac fan. They do nothing better than a PC except cost more money.

Whoops, I should have read more of the thread. There is a Win7 driver for the OKI C3200. Sometimes it helps to temporarily shut off your anti-virus program, clear all your temporary files with a program such as CCleaner, reboot, then run the printer installation routine as administrator. If installation fails, run eventvwr.msc to find what specific errors occurred.
