Acted foolishly? No, he acted as any member of a law-abiding society should act in monitoring his neighborhood for potential threats; that is proven by the monitoring and reporting to 'competent authority' he was engaged in during the activity. I too pray for his safe return to his interrupted life.
Something that really bothers me (from the website):
Will Mr. Zimmerman Have to Pay Taxes on the Money Donated?
Yes. Donated funds are considered income and are taxable.
Are Donations to the George Zimmerman Defense Fund Tax Deductible?
No, they are not.
I made a gift to him, from money I had already paid taxes on. So the IRS will steal more of that money? That is unconscionable!

It sure looks that way.

I don’t think that’s going to bother the government one bit; after all government agents committing acts of war against another nation (not authorized by congress) is apparently yawn-worthy nest. [Fast & Furious]
Add to that the president already said “I think it’s good when you spread the wealth around” and the clamor of [some] to increase taxes, I think it may not be unreasonable to imagine both a national-level sales tax and a VAT (Value Added Tax) both coming into existence, this in addition to current taxes.
