This Zero Tolerance nonsense has to stop.
All too often it leads to draconian punishments for minor thing, or in this case for doing the right thing.
You can never anticipate every possible situation, therefore your rule book should always have room for a measured and appropriate response.

Zero tolerance is garbage for sure. I have to say if I had found a firearm while at work or even not at work I would likely call the police while watching it- without disturbing it. I would wonder if it was possibly evidence in a crime.

I have a recollection of this actually happening to a guy in England. He found a shotgun in his patch of a communal garden and brought it home in a bag. He was charged and jailed for possession after notifying the police to come get it.
This madness IS coming to a town near you.

Chevilott found a small pistol in the grass he was mowing. He turned it over to police after he completed his work shift. That was his crucial mistake. You leave it alone, call for the police and let them retrieve it. Simple.

There is no question that the gun was in his possession, he admits it was, asserted County Supervisor Leonard Prickman. Our policy is clear. No one may carry a firearm on County property. Theres a zero tolerance for violators. We cannot allow anyone to skirt the rules for any reason. To make an exception in this instance would be the first step on the road to total anarchy. And that, my friends, is why free societies have Police/Peace Officers and tyrannies have LEOs.
I would say that we have tripped past the "awkward stage."

So Wayne County should have left the gun there, so it can be picked up by a CRIMINAL and kill someone or rob someone.
Leonard Prickman sounds like a PRICK!

According to the policy NO county employee could remove it from where it was found.
