You can get different counts depending on how you count. For instance there's Spain (and that can count from as few as 1 to as many as 15 separate states ~ depending on what time in history you want to count). Then there's the Algarve in Souvr'n Portugal ~ 1 or 2 Islamic states, and Sicilia, Greece, Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, and some others ~ I don't think they count Souvr'n Thailand yet but they may count the Philippines.

The real reason for 57 is that it is 3 X 19, and 19 is a mystical number for Islam. You have 19 in Africa, 19 in Asia, and 19 somewhere else ~ even though there really aren't 19, nor are there 57, nor are they were some people want to place them in reality.

The whole thing is just bombastic self-glorification.
