Retina scanning can be done at a distance, and without the person even knowing he's being scanned. Homeland Security is currently testing systems. Do not be surprised if, when you sit for your driver's license photo, they also do a retina scan to tie your retina pattern to your ID.

I said retina scan, the article I posted is about iris scans. Iris scans can be done at a greater distance than retina scans.

It scans your image, and stores your 'ID'. It also has a wireless capability, which it can use to upload that data to some massive database.
