Armpit of the world.
It is historic, and that was meaningful. The Space Museum in Alamogordo is also cool. Once, maybe twice.
The cold war and WWII made us do some weird stuff in weird places.

I visited the Trinity site in 1995—and I like the green chile burgers at the Owl Cafe.
I have a cool flick called, The Atomic Bomb Movie. It shows lots of old footage, as well as a bunch of history involved.
Best part...narrated by William Shatner!
Full Title - Trinity and Beyond: The Atomic Bomb Movie
We also visited Trinity Site, but it was about in 1992 or 1993. We did the October Saturday visit.
Was amazing.
My two uncles (both passed) were raised in Alamogordo. As young men after WWII they explored all over the area, including finding great amounts of exposed film all over the floors of the concrete bunkers which were located around Trinity.
Many tens of thousands of both Japanese and American lives were saved by what happened there.
Stallion Gate, by Martin Cruz Smith
There are a couple of sequels. You can get the trilogy of DVDs at Amazon.
I was unaware of that...thank you.
Hanggliding from the mountain above the Space Hall of Fame is very exhilerating.
I love the Alamogordo area. Sunspot, Cloudcroft, High Rolls. Ruidoso and Bonita Lake was a favorite camping area but now that there has been a huge fire, it probably will take decades to recover.
I was seven years old living in Carrizozo when the bomb went off. I can remember people in town talking (before the bomb was tested), about the U.S. “building a bomb no bigger than a softball that would blow up an entire city.”
May husband used to do some work in that area ... White Sands. Interesting place
William Shatner is perfect for a narrator.
Did your uncles collect any Trinitite? Before the government made that illegal, that is.
I understand if the allies invaded Japan, they were estimating a loss of perhaps another million people. My father-in-law had fought in Europe during WW2. After Hitler surrendered, he was most likely going to be sent to fight in Japan.
I read the book, Stallion Gate, too. Quite an explosive ending. :)
That he is. I just watched the movie today after seeing this thread.
