If you havent heard by now, this will shock you. Republican Congressman Todd Akin claimed this weekend that victims of "legitimate rape" dont get pregnant, because, "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down." In the 112th Congress, Akin sits on the House Science Committee. Thats right, this is the man that Speaker Boehner and the Republican party have chosen to lead our nations science policy. We must stand against the Republicans continued utter disregard and disrespect for women. Please donate $3 or more right now to defeat anti-women Republicans >> During the past year, Akin has joined Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan and the House Republican majority in co-sponsoring bills to re-define rape, defund Planned Parenthood, and pass a Federal 'Personhood' Amendment. Please help us elect a Democratic majority who will stop the Republican assault on womens health. http://dccc.org/Protect-Women Were in this together, Nancy
The guy is an idiot.
No wonder we aren’t getting anywhere against the Democrats.
probably too stupid to step down.
Akin won his Primary fair and square and he is the nominee and a good solid Pro Life Conservative who simply made a statement that was blown out of proportion by the DNC and the MSM.
GIve it a few days and a Rep. Akin press conference and all of this will be forgotten. After all, he has an 11 point lead in the polls and has proven himself to be a winner.
Do the right thing little girl, stuff it.
Yes, I was kind of WTF when I read about that, too. However, I think Akin was simply differentiating between actual rape and consensual sex reported as a rape by a regretful woman.
Please let me know if there is someone capable who can replace Akin. As I recall, in the 2004 U.S. Senate race in Illinois, GOP candidate Jack Ryan had to bow out due to a scandal, and his replacement lost to a Democrat state senator. If you think about this unfortunate event, you’ll realize what a world of hurt we’re in because Ryan’s replacement was so inept.
Hang in there Aken if you have the votes.
Boy, would I love for you to win this election.
How would a replacement candidate be chosen?
I do not know the rules in MO.
Akin has made a gaffe that no Republican candidate can ever recover from. Yes, if he was a Democrat he would get a pass. A Democrat can say just about anything and the lamestream media will provide cover. It isnt fair, but life isnt fair.
It doesnt matter how good of a candidate Akin might have been. He is now toast. If he does not step down, then the Democrat will win the seat.
Plus, Akin will pull down conservative candidates all over the country. Every Democrat running for any office in the U.S. will be running ads with Akin as the poster child for the conservative war on women.
Little late making that request. I’ve read from multiple sources that Akin may be stepping down within the next 24 hours.
I honestly don’t believe that when he used the term “legitimate rape” (a stupid, horrible, inaccurate term) that he was distinguishing between date rape / violent rape / or any other type of unwanted, forced sexual activity. I took it to mean the difference between an unwanted, forced sexual activity and statutory rape.
Before I go on - please understand - I am not condoning any form of rape - just trying to explain what I thought his logic was. I took him to be saying when the sexual act is unwanted by the woman, her body will try to reject the pregnancy itself as opposed to when it is a wanted act. In the case of statutory rape even though it may be morally wrong, the female is a willing participant and therefor it is a different type of rape than what he called “legitimate rape”.
Again - I am not defending his use of words, his conclusions of how women’s bodies work - just what I think he meant by that term.
Fascinating. There are more conservatives than rats joining the rape of Akin.
Congratulations.
> Mr. Akin said. If its a legitimate rape...
If rape can be legitimate or illegitimate, is the latter in which a false complaint of rape is made?
Please step down, sir, just to stop all these stupid countless threads on FR! Thank you.
Is his statement any more stupid than that of Hank Johnson, moronic congress critter from Georgia that said he was worried that the island of Guam might tip over if we move our troops to the end of the island.
I'm mighty tired of the permanently aggrieved always looking for an excuse to bitch and moan.
