Gorgeous old Connie...I don't go back quite that far....my first flight as a boy was on a Lockheed Electra.

Same here...the Eastern Shuttle to NYC with my Dad.I was a kid but was old enough to have seen, and understood, all the stories about fatal crashes of Electras.I was scared out of my mind.

Didn’t Lockheed spend millions fixing that problem? Since those first crashes due to fatigue and whirl mode Electras have had an exemplary safety record and the military version, (P-3 Orion), is still in service.

Ever read Robert Serling’s, (Yep, the brother of TV’s Rod), book on the crashes and how they solved the mystery, “The Electra Story”?

My first flight was on an American DC-10, around the time of the Chicago crash. I was assigned a windows seat with a clear view of engine #1.

But scariest flight was an old Frontier 737-200 from SNA-DEN, I watched a constant stream of dark fluid about 3 inches wide coming from the engine cowling the whole flight...followed by a very dark bumpy T'Storm approach into Denver.

(I almost experienced my own stream of dark fluid on that one)
