The Life May Be No Life For Children

Perhaps the Department of Protective Services should consider removing children from the homes of mobsters.

Rita Gigante, the daughter of deceased Genovese boss Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, has written a memoir about growing up with her notorious father, and she recounts how was "tormented by experiences that included witnessing at age 5 her dad beat a rival senseless as she hid under the dining-room table" as reported by Hamilton for the New York Post. Today Rita is a massage therapist who has created a new life with her lesbian partner, and she writes in The Godfather's Daughter that "I grew up in the dark and escaped the dungeon to find my way to the light."

Last week an Italian appellate court affirmed the removal of three children from a family with reputed ties to the Bellocco clan from the 'Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia after their mother allegedly was pressured by relatives into committing suicide for becoming an informant as reported by Michael Day for The Independent: "the appeal judges spoke of the 'urgent need to remove the three children from the family setting permeated by underworld values, tribal loyalties and a distorted sense of honour and respect."

The mob life just may be incompatible with family values.
