I recall at the time thinking that hinging your State’s electoral vote on the outcome of other State’s popular vote would be asking for an election to be tied up in courts for months/years.
Heck, the sitting president could go waaay past his term waiting an outcome.

Yeah... Thank goodness it is 50 state races now. It would be a disaster if it was a national election.
