As long as we need imported oil, we’ll be involved whether we like it or not. Our economy can’t handle $150/bbl oil or higher. American families are under economic attack.
Walking away sounds good but as long as we’re financing the Middle East and terrorism through oil purchases, we don’t have a choice. If we pursued a national strategy of using natural gas for vehicle fuel, it wouldn’t be long before the drop in demand for oil would transfer the financial problems to the Middle East.

another problem is the fact that several of these Islamic countries sit on sea lanes and can therefore be choke points. We can certainly escort ships through these or seize territory for “protective bases” to project power. Much like was done by the Dutch, French , Spanish & English in the 1600s.
Because of this we will never be completely clear of them.
