He was able to because hope sometimes overcomes rational thought.

How will he vote this year though? As good a writer as he is and as knowledgeable as he is on his subject he still picks lousy candidates to vote for.

As for me, as much as I dislike Romney’s tactics against the candidates I liked, he still made it to the top of the ticket. I can’t throw away my vote this year and have Obama stay as President because of it.

I've "known" Simmons for many years now. He is a Democrat who has seen the light. He is on our side now, and has written some scathing commentary in our favor. I'll take it. The past is done.

But the same token, I have recently talked to a former Obama voter, who cannot stand the guy at all. He was similarly swayed back in 08. He and his wife are going to vote against Obama. There mere mention of his name causes a physical reaction of disgust for them. Do I berate them for their previous stupidity? No, I simply encourage their current awakening.

This is a useful insight into the mindset of a lot of white Democrat voters. They keep making the same mistakes because they want to believe so badly that they can to change the world through politics. When and if they can be educated that the sole purpose of electing a government is to put in place an honest, effective, and limited administration - and the world-changing needs to be left to the citizens - then there will be no more Barack Obamas. Dan Simmons learned his lesson, so I am hopeful that others will, too.
