Let's take a step back.

What's the alternative to the new CAFE standards?

How about buying a quality car, probably foreign made, and then keeping it running for decades instead of buying a new one as soon as you pay off this one?

I can easily foresee a future where the most important inheritance will be a well maintained antique car because it will be worth more than the grandparent's house. The CAFE standards WILL depress the auto market and they WILL increase unemployment numbers (but not for the EPA bureaucrats).

That’s why I own a 57 Bel Air and a 67 Camaro which I am restoring to bulletproof condition (stainless steel bolts, rustproofing, etc). They will go to my young niece, she can drive them to eternity. The Bel Air especially is built like a tank.

I’ve run the numbers, even with poor mileage you still come out ahead because of much lower upkeep, interest, etc. You get a non-depreciating car that’s top of the line if you just do quality maintenance and a few upgrades.
