There is a very subtle change in today from the Scopes monkey trial. Back then, the big holy progressive cause, was that a teacher should be free to teach according to his conscience and best knowledge. The state should NOT be allowed to prosecute him for teaching evolution.

Today, they argue the exact opposite. If a teacher wants to even discuss evolution vs creation, or even address problems in evolution as it is interpreted by pop culture, the progressives argue that it should be illegal, that the teacher must only discuss what the state allows him. This is the exact opposite of their position in scopes that the teacher should be free of such interference.
